Willesborough Windmill Welcomes Damian Green MP as part of English Tourism Week

Rt. Hon Damian Green, MP for Ashford, received a warm welcome on Friday (31st March), from Pat White and the team of volunteers at Willesborough Windmill when he visited the working mill, situated on the outskirts of Ashford.

The visits were organised by Visit Kent and took place during Tourism Constituency Day, when Damian Green showed his support for local tourism businesses in Ashford as part of English Tourism Week and ahead of the Kent Big Weekend.

During his visit, Damian Green was shown around the beautifully restored windmill, and earned a Miller’s Certificate after a lesson in making the Windmill’s wholemeal bread flour on the quern stones.

Run entirely by volunteers, the attraction also holds a series of special events throughout the year. The diverse events range from weddings to National Mills Weekend in May, featuring the mill’s vintage 110 yr old hornsby engine and a Teddy Bears’ Picnic in June.

Willesborough Windmill is a regular supporter of Kent Big Weekend and has donated 30 tickets to the campaign, so that local Kent residents can experience the attraction for themselves.

The mill, which opened at the beginning of Kent Big Weekend on 1st April, welcomes around 4,000 visitors a year.

“The Windmill is one of Ashford’s great attractions,” said Damian Green. “It’s great to see the enthusiasm of the volunteers who keep it open for the public and another reason to celebrate English Tourism Week.”

Damian Green, MP for Ashford, was joined by Sir Roger Gale MP in visiting attractions that are participating in the Kent Big Weekend.

Kent Big Weekend is part of English Tourism Week, which highlights tourism as one of the fastest growing sectors in the national economy. This year over 100 attractions have come together to donate more than 22,000 pairs of tickets to local residents during the Kent Big Weekend event.
